David Harwood, of Byfield, died after he got tangled in some brush in the Parker River near Forest and River streets, the Essex County District Attorney said. Witnesses said the fast-moving current prevented him from getting free.

A bystander waded into the water to help but couldn't reach him.

No foul play is suspected.

Several local and state agencies took part in retrieving Harwood's body Thursday night.

Update: Newbury police announced Friday that David Harwood, the victim of Thursday's drowning in Parker River, was a wanted man.

Officers said he had an open warrant for his arrest, though police were not actively searching for him at the time of his death. They had last attempted to arrest him at his Forest Street home on Jan. 3, but he fled, Newbury police said.

Police did not say what he was accused of.
